This book is the result of a yearlong journey “inside” of Philly’s Italian Market. With my camera in hand, I entered the kaleidoscope of light, color, sounds and smells of this 100-year old Philly tradition. I was an observer, an outsider with an interest in the history and tradition of the Market and a passion for documentary photography. So it took some time for me to really understand the Market and for the Market people to understand and accept me.
When I first thought about the Italian Market project, I wanted to capture the character (and characters) of the place and the people. I wanted to tell the story of the Market, to let the reader see and “feel” the Market. It is difficult for the sights and sounds and smells of the Market to be truly and accurately presented in two-dimensional photographs. However, between the images and their captions the reader can better understand how the 100-year history of the Market continues today….and will continue for many tomorrows.
